DEC 2003 NOV 2003 Minutes: Oct. 21 Meeting The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples and the minutes approved as printed in the Newsletter. There was no treasurer’s report. Darrell Collins, Range Chairman, asked members to please replace boards that have holes shot in them. Hammers and supplies are available in the supply room. We need someone who can keep the range mowed so it will be nice for our families. Darrell reminded us that we have as area set up for trap shooting and will fix up the archery area soon. David Prest reported 135 people attended the NRA Banquet and spent $8,000 which will go to the Eddie Eagle program, training new shooters, etc. The club’s Air Rifle Team has grown and still meets every Thursday. Calvary Christian youth will be shooting at our range on Saturday from 9 AM untill late afternoon. It was brought up that the Whispering Pines Police have been shooting at our range which could put us in environmental jeopardy with federal standards for lead. As long as it isn’t an official police function we are OK. James Laubscher reported that lead clean-up procedures are already being practiced. PLEASE, spin the dial on the gate lock when you leave. Locking the gate while using the range is recommended, locking the gate when leaving is required. If you are interested in firearm reciprocity, go to www.packing.org. States Shots Magazine prints information on NC Legislature and shooting competition. The NC Rifle & Pistol Association is NRA sanctioned and membership entitles a person to purchase arms through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. See David Prest for more information and membership applications. It was suggested that someone take core samples of the support poles for the clubhouse so that the ones that were bad could be cut and stubbed; and that Dan Butler, son of the builder Howard Butler, may be able to help or suggest a solution. Needed: someone to take charge of replacing the frozen water pump and to investigate digging a new well. November is the elections meeting. Be thinking of people to nominate for directors and other officers! The meeting was then adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. There was some discussion, but no real ideas were presented. Several announcements were made: Ducks Unlimited will hold a fund-raising dinner in November, the Thursday before the race. Ward Burton, the race car driver, from Wildlife Habitat Foundation will speak. Tickets are $100 each. To learn the Million Moms position on firearm issues, go to www.mmm.com . Darrell Howard and Ed Nicely then spoke on the NRA fundraising banquet to be held Thursday Oct. 2. Of the funds raised from banquets in North Carolina, 50% come back to NC to support various gun related projects. These projects include, but are not limited to, giving money to Camp Millstone for their gun ranges, to the Boy Scouts of America in NC, and to the youth air rifle group that meets at our club. SEP 2003 Minutes: Aug 19 Meeting The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples and the minutes approved as printed in the newsletter. Treas. Jake Kanoy reported the checking balance to be about the same as last month. There were no committee reports. Frank Staples thanked Larry for mowing the club grounds. David Prest announced that where would be an organization meeting for the Friends of the NRA on Monday, Sept. 8, at Ed&Mac226;s Gun Shop. He is looking for volunteers to sell tickets and gather local items for the auction. David also told us that the youth air rifle team has been shooting .22s at the range. The MCWCC has given the Taylortown Police Department permission to use our range for qualification purposes. We expect that to happen about twice a year. Frank Staples asked for members to call him with suggestions on how to make the club house comfortable, i.e. enclosing/lowering the ceiling, installing heat pump, and especially ideas on how to salvage the main support logs that are showing signs of age. Calvin Terry mentioned passive Air Conditioning as an option for next summer. It usually lowers the temperature by 15 degrees and can be rented for about $50 per day. The meeting was adjourned for the program which was presented by James A. (Jim) Fidler from Montgomery Community College. Mr. Fidler gave a power point presentation on the college&Mac226;s goals and their Gunsmithing class. Course registration begins in January and classes rotate every two years. He suggested looking at the college web site for more information. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Note from the President: Please give me your ideas on how we should plan for replacing or repairing our facilities. The lodge needs to be made user friendly in terms of heat and cold and will need repair, or replacing, to the supports sometime in the future. We should plan for that now! We need to do something to make the lodge comfortable now! We need to exclude the birds and snakes and mice that are finding their way in and we need a long term plan for repair/replacing the main structure before it becomes an emergency. I will suggest a once a year fee to be used exclusively for a building fund for our future needs. We also need to be thinking about our officers as we will be nominating for a new slate next month. In attendance: Frank & Libby Staples, Lloyd & Vilma Geisert, Jake Kanoy, Jay & Joyce Medlen, Mike Beaumont, Gary Leopper, Tim Eckersley, Bill Flanagan, Bruce Price )guest), Lee Cox (guest), Ed Nicely, Jim Fidler (speaker), David Prest, James Mann, Rex Connor, Rick & Linda Roberts, Joe Bosco, Jim Jacobsen, Ray Ellis, Joe B., Tom Cestone, Kevin Shea, John While, Bob Johnson, Rick & Amy Varner, Dorothy & Larry Finley, Gregory Conn, Steven Craven, George Schofield, Ralph Newsome, Doug Morris, John Patrick, Calvin Terry. AUG 2003 Minutes: July 15, 2003 The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples. The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. Jake Kanoy reported a balance of $20,167.95 and $481.47 in saving for Camp Millstone scholarships. David Prest reported the Friends of the NRA Banquet is scheduled for Oct. 2. The money for our youth air rifle program came from funds generated by last year's Friends of the NRA banquet. The banquets also support the Eddie Eagle program and built the shooting range at Camp Millstone. We welcomed four new members at the meeting. The club will hold an orientation for ALL members at the January meeting. There was no new business. We welcomed back Roch Bell after he had stints inserted in his heart, and learned that Carlos was back at work after a heart attack. There was no other business so the meeting was adjourned for the program which was presented by Diane Reid of the NC Department of Environment & Resources. Ms. Reed spoke on how her department monitors the health of lakes through chemical studies, temperature, biology, and other means. She reminded us that hydrilla and other aquatic plants can infest lakes when boaters don&Mac226;t properly clean their boats & trailers as soon as they are removed from the water. Aquatic weeds are best cleaned out with rakes when lake levels are down. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Our next meeting will be Aug. 19 at 7:00 PM. Bring some of that good food and join us for fellowship before the meeting. The program will be presented by a representative from Montgomery Community College who will tell us about the gunsmithing course they offer. In Attendance: Frank & Libby Staples, Jake Kanoy, Fred Soloduk, Robert Haan, Roch Bell, Charles Vaughn, John While, Bill Nicely, Lloyd & Vilma Geisert, Rick, Jan, & Amy Varner, Craig & Linda James, Jay Haunhorst, Larry Finley, David Byrd, Robert Blakely, Dan Henson, Ray Ellis, Pat & Fred Ritchie, Roger Darling, Christopher & Anthony Garren, Bill Flanagan, Frank Grimone, David Prest, Calvin Terry, Carson, Valerie, Caroline, Cahterine, Sarah, & Charlotte Cox, Dwight Creech, and guests Lillie Townsend and Diane Reid. JUL 2003 Minutes: June 17, 2003 The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples. The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. There was no treasurers report. Gerry Prange suggested putting up signs as recommended by the NC Rifle & Pistol representative who was at the meeting last month. Frank S. is to find out information. Dwight Creech recommended Eric Strickland of Signs & Windows. Ed told us that the property that was for sale "out front" was bought by one of his customers, who bought it because it was beside the club. The new buyer will probably want to join the club. Scott Popple turned in his resignation as VP of the club and asked for the club to select a replacement in running orientation. David Prest and Dwight Creech have been helping him and David volunteered to handle orientation if Ed would get the range rules, etc. from Scott to give to David. Members were reminded that the gate does not have to be locked while using the range, but warned not to pull the chain tight when locking the gate when leaving. The program was presented by Fred Edgecomb, NC rep of the NRA. He mentioned that if a law officer asks if you have "any special licenses or permits" to be sure to mention your Concealed Carry permit, if you have one. He reminded us that we need to be vigilant about state and federal laws that are presented or up for vote. Section 5 of the Domestic Violence law has a provision that gives a judge the right to take away a husbands firearms in divorce proceedings. The NRA depends on members to keep them informed of laws that may affect gun owners. North Carolina now has agreements with the surrounding states to recognize each others concealed carry permits. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Next meeting: Tuesday, July 15, at the club house. Covered dish supper begins at 7 PM with the meeting following. Our speaker will be Dianne Read from the NC Dept. of Environmental & Natural Resources to speak on care & maintenance of lakes and preventing contamination by fishermen and boaters. In attendance: Frank & Libby Staples, Vilma & Lloyd Geisert, Bill Nicely, Ed Nicely, Robert Blakley, Ken Hohhoff, Ray Ellis, Joe Bosco, Jim Jacobsen, Jim Many, Frank Grimone, Gerry Prange, Bob Steward, Jay Montesanti, David Prest, Dwight Creech, Rick Varner, Tom Nacca, and guest Fred Edgecomb. JUN 2003 Minutes: May 20, 2003 The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples. The business part of the meeting was postponed for the program presented by NCSHP Trooper Scott Richardson. Trooper Richardson talked on Concealed Carry Permit as it pertains to the Highway Patrol. He advised that if you are stopped the first thing you should do is to tell the Patrolman that you have a concealed carry permit, what and where your weapon is, and how many you have with you while keeping your hands on the steering wheel. He stated that your weapon should be in plain view or in a locked area. He answered questions from the membership and advised that we could use the internet to research the state statues on weapons. David Prest reminded us that MCWCC is affiliated with the NC Rifle & Pistol Association which provides range assessment. He introduced Dave Meador, and his friend, Roy Pate, who has had training in range assessment. Mr. Meador said he was envious of our range and that it was adequate for its purpose. He reminded us that "Every round fired is your responsibility" and that, while our backstop is ample for any sensible person, we might consider adding more height. He agreed that signing is important in case neighbors complain. He said that all ranges have trouble with lead as it is a hazardous waste and can be reported to environment control. He suggested that we make a screen and sift out the lead in the impact area, being sure to keep written documentation of who, when, and how much lead is removed. This would show a "good faith" effort if anyone did complain. He also told us of other clubs' requirements, such as one-hour orientation every year and signing two copies of the range rules (one for the club to file and one form the member to keep). He recommended orange/yellow signs saying "Firing Range," "Firearms in Use," etc. on all the boundaries. Darrell Collins announced a range work day on Sat. May 21. The meeting was adjourned with no business presented since the power was out due to a lighting strike in the area. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Next meeting is June 17 at 7PM. Come for good food and fellowship! (Our program is uncertain at this moment.) In attendance: Frank & Libby Staples, Bob Johnson, Charles Vaughan, Fred & Pat Ritchie, Ralph Newsome, Claude Marsh, Ed Nicely, Kevin Shea, Mike Dixon, Ken Hohhof, Darrell Collins, John While, Ray Ellis, Bob Simpson, Tom Cestone, Joe Barry, James Mann, John Montefusco, Allan Carter, Lionel Bryson, Bill Flanagan, Scott Poppele, Mike Beaumont, Anthony Garren, Kevin & Jamie Hyde, Larry Finley, Jay Haunhorst, Steven Craven, David Prest, Andy Chavis, and guests Scott Richardson, Dave Meador, and Roy Pate. MAY 2003 Minutes: April 15 Meeting The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples who recognized several new members. The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. Jake Kanoy, Treasurer, reported a balance of $21,793.94, with a little over $10,400 coming from the payment of dues from approximately 173 memberships. The House Committee reported that the club house needed more maintenance than had been expected, but putting in two handicap accessible toilets was a priority. Jake said he hadnt had the time to work on it that he had expected, but has plans to get the necessary building done. Other needs include replacing the top of the well house, building a woodshed, and fixing the bottoms of the large poles that support the lodge. Darrell Collins reported for the Range Committee that the portable toilet is in place. He asked shooters to be responsible for replacing boards with holes in them, using lumber from the supply room. Also, for shooters to please pick up brass as there is no board member in charge of that task. Darrell Collins then informed the members that the same man who supplies the porta potty at the range can put one at the lodge for $50 per month while we wait for the permanent toilets to be installed. A motion was made, seconded and passed to put a porta potty at the lodge. Discussion was held on the well and someone volunteered to prime the pump. Bill Nicely stated that the property next door was for sale, part of which he thought was being used by the club. Jake Kanoy recommended looking at the deeds and suggested we get a surveyor to check it out. Jake will work with the surveyor and get the information we need so the Board can meet and discuss by the next meeting. The meeting was adjourned for the program by David Prest and the youth air rifle shooters. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Next meeting will be Tuesday, May 20, at the club house. We will have a two part program, one being a report on the range and one a Highway Patrolman who can answer questions about guns and law enforcement, etc. As usual, come prepared for a delicious covered dish supper! The club now has a web site! Its still "in the works" but you are invited to go online to http://mcwildlifeclub.8m.com/index.html. The password is the gate combination. Welcome to our new members! (underlined below) In Attendance: Frank & Libby Staples, Bob Johnson, Charles Vaughn, Bob Simpson, John While, Tom Cestone, Nick Dokich, Fred Soloduk, James Mann, Gary Leopper, Gerry Prange, Jerri Desmond, Darrell Collins, Mike Beaumont, Carson Jones, Anthony Chavis, Kevin Hyde, Robert Haan, Joe Barry, Richard Muhlig, Bill Nicely, Claude Marsh, Jr., Jake Kanoy, Dan Lynch, Larry DeFinley, Devin Shea, Eugene Wilson, Bob Steward, Tom Nacca, John Patrick, Carson Cox and family, David Prest, James Jacobsen, Ken Hohhof, Doug Morris, Pat Ritchie. APR 2003 MINUTES: March 18, 2003 The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Ed Nicely. Treasurer Jake Kanoy reported a balance of $21,151.87 in checking and money market funds and a membership of 173 persons. He stated that the company carrying the NRA endorsed insurance had dropped the NRA and the new company charges $1500.00 for liability but doesnt cover property (buildings) as the other company had. The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter with the correction of Scott Poppele as person in charge of Orientation, not Chairman of the Range Committee. Ed asked that members of the House Committee come early on meeting nights to clean/straighten the clubhouse. Darrell Collins, Chairman of the Range Committee, recognized members who worked on the range and reported that there are already shots in the target numbers and framework. He asks all shooters to please keep shots in the targets and replace the backer boards when they are shot up. Hammer and boards are kept in the storage room at the range. Another work group will be called when the weather is warmer. There was no old or new business. The meeting was turned over to Kim Hyre for a program on the Benefits of Snakes. She reviewed the activities and resources of Weymouth Woods and invited everyone to come see the new museum. We learned that snakes eat a wide variety of foods; including fish, insects, frogs & toads, lizards, rodents and young birds and in so doing help protect our crops. Another benefit comes from one of the enzymes in snake venom which is used as an anticoagulant for stroke victims. A third benefit is in controlling disease by eating the rodents that carry many diseases. Respectfully sbmitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Next meeting will be April 15, at 7PM, at the clubhouse. Bring your favorite "pot-luck" dish to share with everyone. The program will be presented by David Prest. In attendance: Gerry Prange, Frank Grimone, Darrell Collins, Bob Johnson, Charles Vaughn, Nick Doric, John Montefusco, Ken Hohhof, Dwight Creech, Carson Cox & Family, Jerry Raugh, Doug Morris, Fred Soloduk, Robert Haan, Jay Montessanti, Lionel Bryson, James Jacobsen, Steven Craven, Vilma & Lloyd Geisert, Jake Kanoy, Scott Poppele, David Prest, Carlos Vilorio, Bill Nicely, Mack Stewart, Claude Marsh, Jr., James & Therese Laubscher, Fred & Pat Ritchie, Joe Clendenin, Ed Nicely, Tom Nacca, John Patrick, Tom Parkinson, Kevin Shea, Libby Staples. As there was no new business, the meeting was adjourned for the program presented by Joe McDonald, V. Pres. of Central NC area of NC Wildlife Federation. Respectfully submitted, Libby Staples, Sec. Until further notice, range orientation will be held at 6 PM on regular meeting days. The next meeting will be March 18, 7:00 PM, at the clubhouse. The program will be about snakes. FEB 2003 Minutes: Jan. 21 Meeting The meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Staples. There were no minutes from the December Christmas party. Treasurer Jake Kanoy reported 127 new and renewed memberships, with 26 Family memberships, and 8 Life memberships. He reviewed the finances for the past two years: 2001 took in $1,100 less than spent, 2002 gained $7,000 due to increase in membership and less expenses. This year he has collected over $5,000 in membership dues giving a total balance of $17913.70, plus checks received at the meeting. He suggested projects such as re-doing the rest rooms and curing the bird problem, as well as having a rapid fire pistol range and a NRA Shooting camp for youth. Anyone having ideas for projects is asked to turn them in to a board member for consideration by the Board of Directors. JAN 2003 HAPPY NEW YEAR!! There are no minutes for the December meeting/Christmas Party, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Carson Cox family for providing entertainment for the party. The girls have been very gracious in sharing their talents with us for several years and many of us have watched them grow in their musical ability. Thank you girls, and thank you Valerie for your guidance. |
